*(Update: I have located the 1954 P12R speaker that goes with this amp. Its date code reads 220438 which translates to the 38th week of 1954. The amp currently has the 1960 P12R but can be changed out to the 1954 per request. The amp will ship with the 1960 speaker by default. Both speakers sound wonderful and have both been reconed.)
This is a vintage 1954 Fender 5D3 Tweed Deluxe that came right before the 5E3 iteration. And yes, it still retains its original canvas cover from Victoria Luggage Company in Los Angeles, California. Therefore, this iteration of the deluxe features a lot of the same highly sought after tonal shapes and historic overdriven sag as the 5E3. This is what is called the wide-panel version that still houses a Jensen P12R speaker. This speaker is not original to this amp, but has a fresh recone and bears the date code 220024 which translates to the 24th week of 1960. We believe it harmonizes well with this amp, and has surprisingly great bass response and mid-range grind. *(As noted above, the 1954 P12R can be swapped out for this one per the request of the buyer.) The tube amp chart is stamped "DI" indicating that this amp was produced in September of 1954. It's serial number is stamped 2796 and is also verified on the tube chart. This would make a wonderful collectors piece that can still be enjoyed. The "DI" code is also seen stamped inside the chassis as well on the left wall of the chassis. The inside of the chassis also bears the coveted masking tape labeled "Lily" (faint but still visible) who was the one who wired this amp and inspected it. The tweed is all original and has aged wonderfully. It was recently serviced and given a 3-prong cord. It features a vintage tube complement, vintage RCA 5Y3, two vintage Raytheon 6V6 power tubes, a newer JJ 12AY7, and a vintage RCA grey plate 12AX7/7025 that tests very strong. We are including for free three more vintage tubes that each offer a special sonic presence (a vintage Sylvania red-label 12AX7/ECC83, a grey plate 12AX7, and a medical grade Amperex 12AX7/ECC83). This tube line up will give you many different tonal options for recording, or simply enjoying in your music room. This amp has a haunting midrange and overall sounds amazing with its coveted, hairy, compressed gain. It has wonderful chime and glow, and is capable of rich and creamy overdrive. An absolute must have option for recording. I would highly encourage using a BrownBox or similar voltage reducer to protect this amp from the modern wall voltages. It truly preserves the tone and ensures the life of the components. The rarity of this early model make this one a great find. Please view my other listings for more vintage Fender amps.
