In the early 1980s, Ampeg was bought by Music Technologies, Inc. (MTI), which contracted to have SVTs manufactured in Japan. While MTI-era SVTs are mostly identical to the previous versions, they did have differences. Cosmetically, MTI SVTs have black faceplates with white lettering, black grill cloth, "elephant hide" or rougher textured tolex, and rack case-style spring-loaded handles, updated from the previous (and painful) rubber-covered metal strap handles.

So, awhile back we had the matching SVT head that came with this cabinet. You do not see these made in Japan versions very often, but I will tell you that they are just as good if not almost exactly the same. My amp tech of 35 years took that head we sold apart to clean it and they were so closely the same it was amazing. This cabinet is the same way in that if I did not tell you it was made in Japan, the average person would not know the difference.

I have been selling Ampeg SVTs since the mid 1970's and we have been servicing and rebuilding them for 35 years. I can honestly say they are the same. As far as sound, TONE, and clean raw bass, it does not get any better than this cabinet sounds,,, unless you use 2 of them! I have been a bass player by trade for over 50 years and everyone knows what this cabinet is and does. So do not expect anything less than that from this cabinet as it is perfection as far as bass sound goes. Period.

Cosmetically a very clean cab with a few bumps and bruises, but compared to many like it, it has been carefully cared for or not used very much. The speakers are all the originals and sound VERY tight. I will show a picture of the back as soon as I can find a hex nut small enough to flip one over. The wheels roll really well and the handles work great. I have no problem moving the cab around the store, outside and back in by myself and I'm 74 years young! Grill cloth and piping frame almost flawless.

3 summers ago, we sold 35 pieces to the movie set of Bill & Teds Most Excellent Adventure 'Face the Music'! with Keanu Reeves.
Lot's of guitars, amplifiers, rack gear, they wanted a lot of stuff with LOTS of KNOBS!!

We did another movie bit last fall in a film called 'Miracle in Motor City'
starring Smokey Robinson. Our shop had a 15 minute scene in that movie
on the Lifetime channel last November 28th, and it ran through Xmas day.
It might be showing again this holiday season?!
