Definitely the coolest Ampex 601 on the Internet today. Even the bottom panel was hand fabricated out of a furnace vent to match the original! A work of art from one of the most amazing techs I’ve ever had the pleasure to employ.
3rd potentiometer has been removed to make room for phantom power switch (and avoid drilling original faceplate). Entire unit was recapped in 2021… And then recapped again by a better tech in 2022 to fix some problems the first tech created with oscillation (by making it a 120db gain preamp).
The oxide rectifier in the VU was replaced to make it functional again. both bulbs are new. Several resistors have been replaced with lower value components to compensate for defective electrolytic capacitors installed by previous tech. new caps and proper value resistors installed throughout. The chassis was full of metal pieces and bits of wire which were all cleaned up. solder and debris which could have caused shorts and fires and such have been addressed. There were broken ground wires and conductors with abraded/melted insulation which posed a hazard of fire or electrocution so we cleaned and repaired them as well. There were a couple of ceramic disc caps in the audio path so they were removed and replaced. These ceramic disc caps sound awful even when new and get worse over time. We routinely replace with film caps, which we did. This unit now sounds absolutely incredible with any type of mic from gain hungry ribbons to high sensitivity condensers.

We then added a phantom power unit and wired a red led indicator as well as a separate red led power indicator next to it. IEC Power jack has been installed for modern convenience too.
The XLR cannon input on the front recently disintegrated in my hands which was replaced as well, so it is now brand new. All of this work was completed march 2022.
Comes with custom powder-coated rack ears as shown too, which will be removed and bubble wrapped along with each tube for safe shipping. All tubes are either new or NOS high end GE or Sylvania. Some of those GE halo tubes cost me $200 each and as you can see there’s a ton of high end glass here, it’s really a true holy grail preamp.
Again, you’ll be hard pressed to find a cleaner, more powerful 601 on the internet today. It is ready for another 50 years of trouble free service. Also comes with IEC power cable and will be double boxed and secured to withstand the zombie apocalypse.
