The SoaringTortoise Electronics Java Grind Butter-Nut Edition is a specially mellowed, regular grind Fuzz made from 100% recycled materials. You can view a video demo of the Java Grind below on this page.

The Java Grind’s circuit is based on the rare and unusual Interfax HP-1 Harmonic Percolator pedal with a few minor alterations. Our trained monkey engineers have substituted an NPN Germanium, Texas Instruments, transistor from the early 1960’s for the circuit’s originally specified NPN silicon transistor. Additionally, because they are monkeys and cannot read, the engineers placed an early 60’s low gain RCA 2n591 Germanium transistor in the spot where, traditionally, a 2n404 Germanium transistor would reside.

The Java Grind features controls for Grind, which corresponds to the HP-1’s Harmonics control, and Roast which corresponds to the HP-1’s Balance control. The pedal is powered by a single 9-volt battery and is turned on by pulling up on the Grind control knob. The Java grind has a true bypass switch for selecting between the Fuzz and your truly bypassed tones. Our highly trained and experienced, but illiterate, monkey engineers did not add a DC adaptor jack to this unit but, thoughtfully, chose to leave a small notch in the bottom cover which allows for the implementation of a 9-volt adaptor doohickey like those that come with many modern DC power supplies (see video).

The Java Grind Butter-Nut Edition’s specially mellowed nature stems from the fact that, save for a couple electrolytic capacitors form the late 1980’s-early 1990’s, it contains no parts made after 1976. For you real gear nerds out there it also features a very youthful, bright yellow, TEEN branded paper in oil input capacitor which came from a 1960’s Roberts tape recorder amp and two ancient glass encased Germanium diodes.

The Java Grind’s enclosure is made from some select pieces of Amish sawmill scrap wood and a vintage 1950’s Butter-Nut coffee tin. It is surprisingly sturdy yet incredibly light weight.
