The MAM VF-11, manufactured in Germany by Music And More (MAM), is a fully analog 11-band vocoder capable of producing everything from classic robotic voices to unique electronic textures and creative sound effects.

How It Works

The VF-11 processes two separate audio signals: an Analysis signal (modulator), typically a voice or rhythmic source, and a Synthesis signal (carrier), such as a synthesizer, drum machine, or other audio source.

The Analysis section divides the incoming signal into 11 frequency bands covering approximately 50 Hz to 12 kHz. Each band analyzes the amplitude of its corresponding frequency range and generates a control signal that follows the dynamics of that portion of the audio spectrum.

These control signals are then used to dynamically shape the 11 corresponding frequency bands in the Synthesis section. This allows the characteristics and movement of one sound to be imposed onto another, creating the distinctive effects associated with analog vocoding.

Built-In Analog Oscillator

Unlike vocoders that require an external carrier signal, the VF-11 includes its own analog voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). This oscillator generates a sawtooth waveform with adjustable pitch, allowing vocoder effects without connecting an external synthesizer.

For greater flexibility, an external audio signal can also be used as the carrier.

11-Band Filter Bank

Beyond traditional vocoding, the VF-11 can also operate as an analog filter bank. By feeding audio into the Synthesis input and adjusting the individual band levels, you can sculpt the frequency content of your sound.

The filters are non-resonant, making them useful for tonal shaping, experimental sound design, and adding distinctive analog coloration.
