Used DW Collector's Series Pure Birch 4-Piece Drum Set - Black Ice FinishPly

This Used DW Collector's Series Pure Birch Drum Set in Black Ice FinishPly combines DW's Collector's Series platform with the focused tonal character of birch shells and a versatile configuration of 10x8 and 12x8 rack toms, a 15x14 floor tom, and a 22x16 bass drum. The Pure Birch construction is particularly well suited to players who value a clear fundamental and controlled resonance, while the Black Ice FinishPly gives the kit a distinctive, modern appearance.

Condition & Build Quality

This DW Collector's Series kit is in very good used condition. The four-drum configuration includes a 10x8 rack tom, 12x8 rack tom, 15x14 floor tom, and 22x16 bass drum, providing a useful spread of sizes without requiring an oversized setup.

The shells feature DW's Pure Birch construction. Birch has long been favored for recording applications because of its brighter fundamental and comparatively shorter resonant note, characteristics that can help drums remain focused and manageable when microphones are placed close to the heads. DW also describes its Heartwood Birch as material cut from the center of the log, where the grain can have a more highly figured appearance.

The Black Ice FinishPly completes the kit with a visually distinctive exterior that complements the Collector's Series identity. Combined with the compact rack tom depths, 15" floor tom, and moderate-depth bass drum, the configuration offers a practical balance between tonal range and physical footprint.

Sound & Playing Feel

The Pure Birch shell construction gives this kit a clear, defined starting point. Birch is known for a brighter fundamental and shorter resonant note, which can translate into a focused attack and controlled sustain. That character is particularly useful when individual drum notes need to remain distinct within a mix rather than producing an especially long or diffuse resonance.

The 10x8 and 12x8 rack toms provide quick response and two clearly separated upper voices. Their matching 8" depths keep the physical layout compact while allowing each drum to retain enough body for open tuning. Moving down the kit, the 15x14 floor tom occupies an appealing middle ground between common 14" and 16" floor tom sizes. It can provide substantial low-end weight while maintaining a slightly more controlled footprint and response than a larger floor tom.

The 22x16 bass drum anchors the kit with a full 22" diameter and a moderate 16" depth. This combination provides room for a substantial fundamental while retaining an immediate response that can work well in both live and recording environments. Across the entire kit, head selection, tuning, muffling, and room acoustics can be used to emphasize either the naturally focused qualities of the birch shells or a more open and resonant response.

The result is a Collector's Series configuration with a defined attack, useful tuning range, and controlled tonal profile. If you are looking for a used DW kit that combines Pure Birch construction with versatile sizes and a distinctive Black Ice finish, this set is well worth considering.

Applications & Use Cases

• Studio Recording: The brighter fundamental and shorter resonant character of birch can help individual drums remain focused and clearly defined under microphones.
• Live Performance: The combination of controlled sustain and clear attack helps the toms and bass drum maintain definition within a full-band mix.
• Compact Four-Piece Setup: The 10x8, 12x8, 15x14, and 22x16 configuration provides a broad tonal spread without the footprint of a larger shell pack.
• Flexible Tuning: Two rack tom sizes and the less-common 15" floor tom create useful pitch separation while allowing the overall tuning range to be adjusted for different musical settings.
• Controlled Drum Sounds: The Pure Birch construction is particularly suitable when a focused fundamental and manageable sustain are preferred over an especially long resonant response.
• Expandable Kit Foundation: The four-drum configuration provides a versatile core setup that can be supplemented with additional drums, snares, cymbals, or percussion as needed.
