Early Electro-Harmonix NYC Big Muff Pi from the Fran Blanche/Frantone era. This version is historically notable as the American-made Big Muff reissue developed around 2000 after Electro-Harmonix returned production of the pedal to New York.
Fran Blanche, founder of Frantone Electronics and an engineer at Electro-Harmonix at the time, developed and refined the circuit that became this generation of the Big Muff. It retains the classic four-transistor Big Muff architecture with revised component values for the new NYC production version.
Sonically, it delivers everything associated with a great Big Muff: huge saturated distortion, thick low end, compressed sustain, and the characteristic scooped-mid tone. The Sustain control ranges from gritty distortion to massive fuzz, while the Tone control moves from dark and heavy to bright and cutting.
An increasingly interesting early version of the modern NYC Big Muff, with an important connection to Fran Blanche and Frantone Electronics.
