TEAC 3340S - 4 Track Reel to Reel 1/4” Tape Recorder

TEAC 3340S four-channel Simul-Sync reel-to-reel tape deck.

The 3340S is one of TEAC’s classic multitrack reel-to-reel machines, capable of four-channel recording/playback as well as two-channel stereo operation. It operates at 7½ and 15 IPS and accommodates reels up to 10½ inches. The original TEAC specifications list the machine at approximately 50 lbs. 

Operating condition

The unit powers up and was recently used for extended playback while transferring my tape collection to digital.

During my use:

• Playback operated properly
• Play, stop, fast-forward and rewind functions operated
• VU meters operated during playback
• Controls and switches were functional for the purposes for which I used the machine

I recently used this unit to digitize old reel to reels and it functioned fine. I have not had the deck recently professionally serviced, aligned or calibrated, and I have not performed a complete technical evaluation of every recording channel, Simul-Sync function, bias setting or specification. It is therefore being represented as a working vintage machine based upon my recent actual use, rather than as a professionally restored or laboratory-calibrated deck.

Cosmetic condition

The machine presents very well considering its age. The brushed-metal faceplate is clean and attractive, the four VU meters display nicely, and the controls appear complete.

The wood side panels remain attractive with some normal age-related marks and edge wear. There are also minor marks on the metal surfaces consistent with normal use and age.

Because this is a vintage electronic component approximately 50 years old, it is sold based upon the operating condition described above. Future maintenance should always be expected with vintage audio equipment.
