The monome 40h is the original open-source 8×8 (64-button) grid controller (“40h” is hex for 64). It was limited production (~400 units + kits and a small special edition) with an aluminum faceplate and black silicone base. Buttons and LEDs are decoupled by design so software defines the behavior (sequencers, sample triggers, generative tools, 1-bit visuals, etc. via OSC/serialosc, Max/MSP, norns, etc.).
Clear acrylic sandwich case with standoffs/screws (a common approach for monome kits and DIY grids; commercial clear acrylic cases for 40h kits were even sold).
• White square silicone/rubber keypads over a button + LED matrix.
• Visible green PCBs, ribbon cables connecting the keypad/LED boards to logic/driver boards, DIP chips (typical of shift registers, MAX7219-style LED drivers, or AVR micros), USB-B (and possibly other) ports, and various solder joints/headers.
