Shure PE 585

Shure PE 585 Unisphere A is a vintage, unidirectional dynamic microphone manufactured by Shure Brothers Inc. during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Specs:

• Type: Dynamic cardioid (unidirectional) microphone
• Frequency Response: 50 to 13,000 Hz
• Impedance: Typically high-impedance (Hi-Z) for the PE 585 / 585SA models (though low-impedance variants like the 585SB also existed)
• Switch: Features a built-in on/off switch
• Connector: Uses an older, non-XLR proprietary or Amphenol connector on the microphone end (often converting to a 1/4-inch mono plug) rather than a modern standard XLR cable

Sound Profile & Use Cases

• Tone: Known for a mid-range focused, warm, or slightly "fuzzy/crunchy" vintage character compared to modern standards.
• Applications: Frequently used for live vocals, general broadcasting, speech, and famously as a blues harp/harmonica microphone due to its high-impedance direct compatibility with guitar amplifiers.
• Comparison to Shure SM58: While historically positioned as a workhorse live mic, it lacks the technical specs, high-frequency smoothness, and standard XLR convenience of a modern Shure SM58, though many musicians still enjoy its unique retro coloration.
