The FZ-5 uses Boss's COSM modeling to recreate three classic '60s and '70s fuzzes. A mode knob picks between them:

M – Maestro FZ-1A: the original buzzy, brassy '60s fuzz

F – Fuzz Face: thick, round, and touch-sensitive

O – Octavia: octave-up fuzz with a searing, ring-mod quality

The Fuzz knob goes from mild grit to full saturation. In the upper half of its range it adds a boost stage for extra gain and sustain.

Because the FZ-5 is a modeled fuzz, it avoids the usual vintage-fuzz problems. It doesn't drift with temperature, it doesn't need to come first in your chain, and it doesn't react badly to buffers. You can put it anywhere on your board and it behaves the same every time.
