A magnificent example of Yamaha's celebrated CR-2040, one of the company's flagship Natural Sound stereo receivers from the golden age of Japanese high-fidelity audio.

Rated at a substantial 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the CR-2040 combines formidable power reserves with Yamaha's sophisticated audio engineering and distinctive, understated styling. Its extensive control facilities include adjustable bass, presence, and treble turnover frequencies, variable loudness compensation, dual phono inputs, dual tape facilities, and separate record output selection.

This example has been preserved in substantially original condition, rather than subjected to unnecessary modifications or wholesale component replacement.

Service and Performance

The receiver has received a thorough cleaning and basic maintenance, including cleaning of the controls, adjustment of bias and DC offset, and comprehensive operational testing.

It has also successfully completed an extended eight-hour listening test.

Performance is excellent, with powerful, clear, beautifully balanced stereo reproduction.

Three minor control issues remain:

• 10 kHz High Filter: The pushbutton will not remain depressed.
• -20 dB Audio Muting: The pushbutton will not remain depressed.
• Stereo/Mono Mode: The pushbutton will not remain depressed, so monaural operation cannot be selected.

Replacement components for these switches could not be sourced. Rather than introduce inappropriate substitutions or modifications, we elected to preserve the receiver's original construction.

These limitations do not interfere with normal stereo listening, and all other tested functions operate correctly.

Cosmetic Condition

Very good vintage condition overall, with an attractive brushed aluminum faceplate, original controls, and handsome dark woodgrain cabinet.

There are some minor signs of age and handling, including small nicks along the rear edge of the cabinet. The original finish has been retained.
