This is an original Mitchell Mini Cab out of Riverside, CA, paired with a 15" Electro-Voice (EVM-15B) speaker from the 1970s, highly praised by vintage tone enthusiasts, particularly bass players, for its unmatched clarity, extreme rigidity, and highly efficient projection.

Condition is good for a 48-year-old cab.

These cabinets are sought after for several distinctive reasons:

Tom Mitchell developed a proprietary, legendary design known as the "Sand Cab" or "Sand Amp". The cabinet walls were built double-walled and filled with sand to isolate vibrations and eliminate unwanted resonance.

  • Zero Enclosure Coloration: When a speaker cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate, all of the energy from the transducer is directed entirely toward pushing the speaker cone forward.
  • Ultra-Tight Bass Response: This absolute rigidity prevents the muddy, boomy bass frequencies common in standard 1970s plywood or particle-board enclosures, leaving purely transparent, punchy low-end definition.

During the 1970s, pairing a Mitchell enclosure with a heavy-duty 15-inch EV driver (such as the EVM-15 B series) created a phenomenal combination.

  • Massive Power Handling & Efficiency: Unlike the fragile speakers of the era that broke up early, EV drivers featured huge magnets and cast frames that could take immense punishment without distorting.
  • True Full-Range Clarity: These 15" speakers offered a massive frequency response. They provided clean, bone-rattling lows for bassists, while maintaining a sweet, articulate high-midrange that guitarists and pedal steel players loved.

The "Mini" footprint was highly desirable for gigging musicians who wanted the massive sound stage of a 15" speaker without hauling a refrigerator-sized cabinet. While the sand-filled design made these small cabinets surprisingly heavy for their size, their compact dimensions allowed them to fit easily into trunks and vans while throwing out the sound of a much larger rig.
