Check my feedback and feel reassured, no worries. Also check out my other listings of Vintage Collectable Speakers and Gear.

I am starting to go thru my old Marshall Cabinets Celestion Speakers from the late 1960’s and 1970’s. There is also a couple I bought from John Stillwell (Dawk Sound) in the early 1980’s AKA Ritchie 80 Watters that I will be listing too. I meet John thru my friends Ronnie Dio and David Feinstein from the band Elf when I auditioned as a bass player when Ronnie was leaving. I switched to Guitar and kind of did a takeoff from them in the band that I started in 1974, Little Trolls, later (The Trolls) now Trolls 2.0 with my sons. John worked on my Marshalls and Gibson Guitars in the early 1980’s when he lived in Ithaca. He worked on Ritchie Blackmore amps.  He even gave me a left handed SG truss rod cover from Tony Iommi’s guitar and put it on my right handed SG. Pretty cool. Anyways more on that as I start listings all the speakers. Not sure if I’m ready to part with the old Marshall amps, stay tuned.

The following information mostly from Bygone Tones Celestion Website about these old Celestion speakers

This is a highly sought-after, vintage Celestion G12H "Blackback" guitar speaker, universally regarded as one of the holy grails of rock-and-roll guitar tone. Your specific model details translate to a legendary piece of gear. Specification Overview

  • Pulsonic is a legendary Pulsonic cone with a lead/lead-guitar 75Hz resonance.

🎸 Why the "Pulsonic " Pulsonic is Special Pulsonic cones are famous for using a specific organic fiber mix that was destroyed in a catastrophic factory fire in late 1973. Cones made before the fire possess a highly musical, warm, and woody midrange. When pushed by a tube amplifier, they break up smoothly, producing the quintessential "Brown Sound" famously used by artists like Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young (AC/DC), and Eddie Van Halen.

Your specs detail a highly collectible, vintage guitar speaker. Based on the codes provided, this is a vintage Celestion G12H Blackback era speaker manufactured on April 5, 1971 at the Rola Celestion factory.

Here is the exact breakdown of what your information reveals about your speaker:

Production Date Code: DD5

Celestion speakers use a specific date-stamping method consisting of the day, month, and year. [1]

  • D: This stands for the month of April (A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr).
  • D: This stands for the year 1971 (historically, Celestion's year codes recycled, but the 1971 designation is firmly locked in by the "Rola Ipswich Suffolk" label, which transitioned in during this exact period).
  • 5: This represents the 5th day of the month.
  • Production Date: April 5, 1971.

Coding & Component Breakdown

  • T1862: This is the factory T-number (Model Code). For this specific model, it denotes a standard heavy-magnet G12H (30W) built with a 16-ohm voice coil and a 75 Hz cone.

The 1777 stamp indicates the type of paper cone used during manufacture:

  • This is Celestion's stock 75 Hz "Lead" cone, which gives the speaker its classic British rock voicing. It features tighter bass attenuation and a more aggressive, stinging upper-midrange bite compared to the bass-heavy 55 Hz alternative.
  • Given the April 1971 date, this is an authentic, original, highly coveted Pulsonic cone (known for its highly musical organic compression).Pulsonic cones from this era are highly coveted by collectors and guitarists for their smooth, organic breakdown and musical mid-range.

Physical & Tonal Characteristics

  • G12H: The "H" denotes a Heavy magnet (50 oz ceramic magnet). This gives the speaker a louder output (100 dB sensitivity), punchier bass, and a slightly clearer top-end clarity compared to the "M" (Medium magnet) Greenbacks.
  • Rola Ipswich Suffolk: This label on the back magnet plate marks the historical era when Celestion moved production from its older Thames Ditton plant over to the facility in Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

• Power & Impedance: Rated for 30 watts at 16 ohms, it is ideally suited for vintage Marshall 4x12 or 2x12 cabinets.

Highly prized by collectors and tone purists.
