Arnie is a singing vowel oscillator. A pitched tone is shaped by three formant filters so it sounds like a human voice holding a vowel — aah → ehh → eee → ohh → ooo — and you can sweep smoothly between those vowels while you play.
It's a drone/lead voice: patch a pitch into it, sweep the vowel, and it sings.
Two raw, buzzy oscillators play the same note — a mellow one and a bright one. Each is sent through a bank of three formant filters (resonant peaks). The positions of those three peaks are what your ear reads as a vowel. Move the peaks around and the "mouth shape" changes from one vowel to the next.
