The BBE 802 Sonic Maximizer is a classic dual-channel signal processor designed to enhance clarity, definition, and low-end punch in audio signals. This 1U rackmount unit is a staple in many home and professional studios, frequently used to "brighten up" recordings, improve live PA systems, or add depth to synthesizers and drum machines. It features independent Lo Contour and Process controls for both channels, allowing for precise sound shaping. There are balanced and unbalanced input and output connections on the rear panel.

This unit is in poor condition. The unit does power on, and one channel does indicate signal input, but I do not know if any processing is occurring. There is some corrosion on the balanced inputs and outputs, and normal cosmetic wear from 35+ years of use. (See Photos)

Overview & Specifications

  • Design: Single-space 19-inch rack unit (+4dBu balanced line-level application).
  • Connections: Balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/4-inch jack inputs and outputs on the back panel for each channel.
  • Controls per Channel: Line input adjustment, low-frequency enhancement trim, and a high-frequency enhancement knob.

How It Works

  • Phase & Amplitude Correction: The unit splits the audio spectrum into three bands using internal crossovers and time-aligns the frequencies to restore natural clarity lost through mixers, microphones, and speakers.
  • Application: Widely used on individual tracks (like bass or kick drums) or full stereo mixes to add weight and reduce muddy frequencies.
