Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo Mahogany 2018
2018 Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo – Virtually New Condition
A superb example of the Deering Sierra 5-string banjo, dating from 2018 and presented in virtually new condition. This instrument has seen very little use and remains in pristine condition, with an exceptionally clean appearance throughout.
The Sierra has long been one of Deering’s most respected professional-grade models, offering impressive American craftsmanship, excellent playability and the kind of tone and response expected from a serious bluegrass instrument. Greg Deering designed the Sierra to concentrate on the components that matter most to sound and performance, making it a highly regarded choice for both dedicated players and working musicians.
Factory Specification
This 2018 example features the traditional resonator-backed, 5-string configuration, built around Deering’s three-ply violin-grade maple rim and their -06- 20-hole bell-bronze tone ring. The pot assembly is completed by a one-piece cast zinc flange, notched brass tension hoop, 11-inch frosted banjo head, Deering True Tone tailpiece and nickel-plated hardware.
The neck is fitted with an ebony fingerboard, Deering-designed inlays, 22 nickel-silver frets and planetary tuning machines, together with a geared fifth-string tuner. The classic Deering neck profile offers a comfortable playing feel, while the satin finish gives the instrument an understated, traditional appearance.
Typical factory dimensions include a 26 1/4-inch scale length, a 1 1/4-inch nut width and an 11-inch rim. The resonator-backed construction and substantial bronze tone ring give the Sierra the projection, clarity and dynamic response required for bluegrass playing.
Tone and Playability
The Sierra is known for its clear, articulate voice, with a strong fundamental, crisp note definition and the bright, cutting projection that allows a banjo to hold its place in an acoustic ensemble. The bronze tone ring provides a lively response and excellent sustain, while the maple rim contributes clarity and focus.
It responds well to both precise picking and a more forceful right-hand attack, making it equally suited to traditional bluegrass, ensemble work, recording and serious home playing. The overall impression is of a well-engineered professional instrument with excellent tonal authority and a refined, dependable playing feel.
Artist Association
Deering banjos are closely associated with the wider bluegrass and acoustic music community, and the Sierra has earned its reputation as a professional-grade instrument through its combination of tone, construction and playability. We have not verified a specific artist association for this particular 2018 example, so none is claimed.
This banjo is supplied with its original Deering paperwork and original Deering hard-shell case, which is also in perfect condition.
A particularly clean opportunity to acquire a virtually unused American-made Deering Sierra, complete with its original documentation and case.
