Wanting a deeper, richer tone - satisfied by 100 years of history and 20 years of aging.
KAMAKA sits at the very top of the ukulele world. Founded in 1916 by Samuel Kamaka, it is Hawaii's oldest ukulele maker, essentially synonymous with the instrument's own history. Today's standard ukulele shapes and sizes were all established by KAMAKA.
The HF-2 balances the light, snappy character of a soprano with the volume and playability of a tenor in a concert-size body. The asymmetrical headstock is unique to the HF-2.
The Hawaiian koa used for ukulele bodies has the property of developing its tone the more it's played over time. New KAMAKAs have a youthful brightness, but this 2006-built example has had 20 years for the wood's moisture to fully dry out, letting it remember vibration at the cellular level. The result is a mellow, sweet tone with rounded edges you simply can't get from a new instrument, along with deep sustain that makes the whole body shimmer.
High-quality Hawaiian koa is becoming increasingly scarce worldwide, so an example from the mid-2000s that used abundant, high-quality koa, and has since gained 20 years of aging value, in good condition, is not something you can simply seek out and find on the secondhand market. Both the grain and the matured tone make this a genuinely one-of-a-kind piece.

String height at the 12th fret: 3.5mm (6th string), 3.0mm (1st string)
Saddle projection: approx. 3.5mm-4.0mm. No buzzing or note choking; plays well overall.
