This neck came from a complete vintage CBS-era Fender Precision Bass that was acquired intact. Except for felt and glue residue from a Fender Parker body guard and a poorly executed brown body repaint, examination indicated a largely original, period-correct late-1960s instrument.
Before disassembly, the assembled bass was tested and played. The neck played smoothly with good intonation (see sample video) .
NECK DESCRIPTION
Genuine vintage USA Fender Precision Bass neck believed to date from the late 1960s, most likely approximately 1968-69 based on the collective evidence.
The heel carries a clear “J. Torres” worker/inspection stamp. The original ink date stamp is substantially faded but appears to follow Fender’s period format:
5 MAY [year illegible] B
In that format:
5 = Precision Bass model code
MAY = production month
B = Fender B-width neck designation
The full nut/neck width measures approximately 1 5/8 inches, or 41.3 mm, independently confirming the B-width designation. The two year digits between MAY and B are too degraded to represent as definitively readable.
The headstock retains the period black CBS-style Fender Precision Bass decal with gold outlining, registered-trademark symbol and patent-number lettering. This decal style is consistent with the late-1960s period and appeared during the 1968 transition from the earlier silver-style decal.
Features include:
* Rosewood fingerboard
* Approximately 1 5/8-inch B-width nut
* Black CBS-era Fender Precision Bass headstock decal
* Clear J. Torres heel stamp
* Faint period Fender heel date stamp
* Original round string retainer/string tree, spacer and mounting screw
* Original heel-mounted truss-rod adjuster
* Original tuner and neck-mounting holes (tuners sold separately)
* No visible cracks, breaks or repaired headstock damage
* Honest age-related finish wear, marks and discoloration
Before disassembly, the neck was played. Following adjustment of the bass, it played through the fretboard without fret buzz. The frets and fingerboard show normal vintage wear consistent with the photographs.
The four lollipop-style tuners shown in some provenance photographs are being offered separately and ARE NOT INCLUDED with this neck. The original round string retainer/string tree, spacer and screw remain installed and ARE INCLUDED.
Please examine every photograph carefully. The photographs constitute an important part of the condition description. This is an approximately 58-year-old vintage component and is being offered in its present, documented condition.
No attempt has been made to clean, refinish, touch up or enhance the neck, decal, heel markings or hardware. The faint date stamp has been described conservatively: the model code, month and B-width designation are supported, but the two-digit year is not claimed as definitively legible.
