Beautiful 2011 Rick Turner Compass Rose tenor ukulele, handcrafted by The Renaissance Guitar Company in Santa Cruz, California.

This example is stamped “11” and “259” at the end of the headstock, indicating a 2011 build with serial/build number 259.

The body appears to be constructed from highly figured solid sycamore, a wood Rick Turner used on a number of Compass Rose instruments from this period. The dramatic ribbon and ray figuring is especially prominent across the back and sides and gives the instrument a beautiful three-dimensional appearance under the gloss finish. Because we do not have the original build sheet, the sycamore identification is based on appearance and documented comparable Compass Rose builds.

The Compass Rose is one of Rick Turner’s most distinctive acoustic designs, drawing inspiration from the historic Howe-Orme instruments while incorporating Turner’s own construction ideas. The player-facing side soundport, cantilevered fingerboard, unusual body shape and compass-themed appointments make these immediately recognizable.

This particular example is especially attractive due to the pronounced figure throughout the body. The back and sides display beautiful shimmering ribbon and ray patterns that change considerably with the viewing angle and light.
