Here’s a fantastic example of one of Fender’s most interesting and highly regarded small-format amplifiers: an early-production 1982 Fender Super Champ from the legendary Rivera era. Designed during Paul Rivera’s influential tenure at Fender, the original Super Champ was a very different animal from the traditional Champ circuit—a compact 18-watt, push-pull 6V6 amplifier with real spring reverb, a master volume, midrange boost, and a switchable higher-gain lead circuit. These amps have developed a well-deserved following among players, recording engineers, and collectors for their combination of classic Fender cleans and surprisingly aggressive overdrive.

This example carries the serial number F400194 and is from the early production period of the original Super Champ run. It is in very good overall condition, with particularly nice cosmetics for a vintage amplifier of this age. The original black tolex is in excellent condition, presenting very well with only the kind of minor signs of age and use you would expect from a vintage amp that has been played and enjoyed. The chrome hardware shows some natural patina consistent with its age, adding to the character without detracting from its overall appearance.

The amplifier has been upgraded with an Eminence Ragin’ Cajun 10” speaker, which gives the Super Champ considerably more punch, efficiency, low-end authority, and overall presence while retaining the character that makes these amps so enjoyable. The original Fender speaker is included with the sale, so the amp can be returned to its original speaker configuration if desired.

The Super Champ’s circuit is particularly special. Its two 6V6 power tubes produce approximately 18 watts in a push-pull configuration, giving it considerably more headroom and authority than its compact size would suggest. The clean channel delivers the familiar Fender combination of sparkle, warmth, and touch sensitivity, while the pull/switchable lead circuit adds another gain stage for thicker, more saturated tones. The built-in spring reverb adds another dimension to the amp, ranging from subtle ambience to lush Fender-style depth. There is also a mid-boost function that can give the amp a useful additional push when you want more focus and drive.

One of the genuinely distinctive features of these early Super Champs is the 6C10 Compactron tube. This unusual triple-triode tube performs multiple jobs within the circuit and has become something of a signature component of the original Rivera-era Super Champ. This amp also includes an extra vintage Sylvania 6C10 tube, a particularly nice bonus given the relative scarcity of these tubes today.

Most importantly, this Super Champ sounds fantastic. The upgraded Ragin’ Cajun gives it plenty of authority and projection, and the combination of the classic Fender clean voice, real spring reverb, and switchable higher-gain circuit makes this a remarkably versatile little vintage combo. It can deliver beautiful clean Fender tones at manageable volume, but it is equally at home when pushed into the thicker, harmonically rich overdrive that these Rivera-era Super Champs are known for.

The early Rivera-era Fender amps have earned a special place in Fender history, and the Super Champ is arguably one of the most successful expressions of that period. It is compact enough for a studio, rehearsal room, or home setup, but has considerably more character and versatility than its size suggests.
