1913 Gibson A-4 Blacktop Mandolin in stock!!
Up for sale is our nice 1913 Gibson A-4 Blacktop Mandolin. This is an exceptionally rare and valuable Gibson flat-mandolin that was made well over 100 years ago.
The A-4 was introduced in 1902, the year the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co., Ltd. was established as the company that marked the beginning of Gibson’s true history as a musical instrument manufacturer. At the time, the A-4 was the highest-grade model among Gibson’s A-style, oval-hole mandolins.
The peghead features the classic pearl Gibson logo and fleur-de-lis inlay, along with beautifully decorated tuner buttons and a low-profile rosette, all befitting a top-of-the-line instrument. In particular, the decorative details on the tuner buttons have developed an incredible character and charm over the years.
The heavily weather-checked black top contrasts beautifully with the rich, reddish Gibson red-brown back and sides, creating an exceptionally cool and distinctive appearance. The shape of the headstock is equally full of character.
The construction features a beautifully arched spruce top, maple back and sides, a mahogany neck, and an ebony fingerboard. The neck has a nut width of approximately 30.5 mm and a V-shaped profile. As was typical of this period, there is no truss rod. The original bridge and the tailpiece bearing the “The Gibson” stamp are both wonderfully evocative of the instrument’s age and history.
Sonically, this mandolin is powerful and immediately conveys a sense of its remarkable history. Its dry vintage tone is deeply expressive, with a sweet, rounded character that rings out beautifully. The wonderfully aged, resonant quality of the wood produces a mature and pleasing sound that is sure to captivate any player.
Condition
Considering that this instrument is more than 100 years old, it remains in very good condition overall, with no body cracks. The interior label has also been preserved in clean condition. The pickguard has been replaced, but it complements the body beautifully and has a wonderful vintage character. The pickguard bracket is original and has developed a great deal of authentic old-world patina. There is a slight step or unevenness around the neck heel area, but this does not affect playability or use. The neck binding has also been replaced.
With its deep, rich, and characterful tone, beautifully aged appearance, and strong sense of history, this is a truly exceptional piece that allows you to fully appreciate the heritage of Gibson mandolins.
The hard case shown in the photos is included.
