Teenage Engineering does not make predictable products, and the EP-1320 Medieval is a perfectly committed expression of that philosophy. Built on the same platform as the EP-133 K.O. II — pressure-sensitive keys, a high-resolution sequencer, 32-bit float signal chain, and a genuinely deep beat-making workflow — the Medieval edition replaces the K.O.'s hip-hop DNA with an exhaustively researched library of medieval sounds recorded with the same care and specificity that Teenage Engineering applies to everything they build. Hurdy-gurdies, lutes, Gregorian chants, mouth harps, thundering frame drums, percussive foley, sword and arrow effects, farm animals, peasants, witches, and what is described with a straight face as an actual dragon. It is absurd and it is completely serious at the same time, which is exactly the right tone for an instrument that is genuinely useful as a creative tool regardless of whether medieval music is actually your thing.
The 128MB total memory — 96MB of hardwired ROM sounds and 32MB of user sample space — gives you a deep library to work with out of the box and room to add your own material via the built-in microphone or stereo line input. Six stereo voices or twelve mono, a new arpeggiator, 7 built-in send effects, 12 punch-in effects, nine demo songs, nine user projects, and MIDI in and out via TRS-A and USB-C make this a complete, self-contained composition and performance tool. It runs on four AAA batteries or USB-C power, which means it works anywhere. The earth tone finish, Latin panel labeling, and medieval iconography throughout — including a candle icon for low battery — are executed with the kind of obsessive attention to detail that makes Teenage Engineering products feel genuinely considered rather than gimmicky.
