Ludwig 75th Anniversary Bronze 6.5x14 Snare Drum – Chicago Badge – Rare Factory Configuration

A very unique piece of Ludwig history and an exceptionally interesting drum from the late Chicago era.

This is a Ludwig 75th Anniversary Bronze 6.5x14 featuring the Chicago badge and Ludwig laser engraving.

What makes this particular drum especially unusual is its history. The bronze shell was originally factory drilled for Ludwig's Super Sensitive mechanism and later converted by Ludwig to a Supraphonic-style configuration. The laser engraving was also done by Ludwig, making this a fascinating example from the anniversary/late Chicago period.

The early Ludwig bronze shells have a character all their own—powerful and full-bodied, yet warm, articulate, and extremely responsive. At 6.5x14, this drum has plenty of depth and projection while retaining the sensitivity these early Ludwig metal snares are known for.

Condition: The drum presents beautifully for its age. There are a few very small spots of natural patina, which is normal and expected on these early bronze shells, along with minor signs of age and use such a small superficial scratches.

One of the most fascinating and highly sought-after "factory recycling" stories in drum collecting history.

In the vintage drum community, these are known as the 1984 Ludwig 75th Anniversary factory-converted Supraphonics.

Here is the breakdown of how and why Ludwig made these unique bronze snare drums:

## The Story Behind the Mix-Up

* Super-Sensitive (Model LB-556EN): The Original Plan: To celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 1984, Ludwig planned a very limited run of 100 premium bronze snare drums (14x6.5") featuring a beautiful, laser-engraved floral pattern. The flagship model was intended to be a Super-Sensitive (Model LB-556EN).

* Over-Drilling at the Factory: The factory ended up drilling more of these expensive, engraved bronze shells than they had Super-Sensitive mechanisms for. These shells already had the extra, distinct slots and holes required for the extended P-70 dual-strainer system and snare guards.

* Supraphonic bronze snares (Model LB-552): The Backlog Solution: At the same time, Ludwig was facing a massive production backlog for their standard, smooth-shell Supraphonic bronze snares (Model LB-552). To avoid wasting the engraved anniversary shells and to fulfill pending orders quickly, management decided to convert the leftover Super-Sensitive shells into Supraphonics.

## How Ludwig Made the Conversion

To transform a shell pre-drilled for a Super-Sensitive into a traditional Supraphonic, factory workers made a few direct modifications right on the assembly line:

* Plugging the Extra Holes: They used factory screws, nuts, or rivets to seal the extra holes where the parallel mechanism rods would have gone.

* Standard Hardware: They installed a standard P-85 strainer and butt plate right over or alongside the existing holes.

* No Snare Guards: The bottom hoop extensions and metal guards typical of a Super-Sensitive were completely omitted.

## A Collector's "Unicorn"

These hybrid drums are incredibly rare.

They feature the 75th Anniversary commemorative badge, the large Chicago Keystone logo, and the premium floral engraving, but mechanically they are Supraphonics with factory-plugged holes.

Because this happened right around 1984, these drums represent the absolute end of Ludwig's legendary Chicago era right before the company relocated its operations to Monroe, North Carolina.
