A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLES,

YAMAHA’s TOP OF LINE TUNER FROM MID 80’S. I BELIEVE THE MSRP WAS ABOUT $400 (Which converts to about $1250 for today).

This unit is close to new condition with only a couple tiny blems you would have a hard time finding. I bought it a few years ago for a project I never finished.

I think it must be has be be very a “rare item for condition”. So if that is important for the buyer you will have a hard time finding a comparable!.

Yamaha T-85 Tuner

The Yamaha T-85 tuner features low distortion, excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 90 dB, strong selectivity of 90 dB, and a wide FM tuning range of 87.5 to 108 MHz, making it ideal for clear and enjoyable radio listening. It also has a straightforward operation and durable construction, ensuring reliable performance.

The Yamaha T-85 is well-regarded for its clean sound and solid performance, but it may not match the reception capabilities of modern tuners like the Sony XDR-F1HD, which offers superior selectivity and sensitivity. However, many audiophiles appreciate the T-85 for its musical quality and vintage appeal.

The Yamaha T-85 tuner, produced between 1986-88, is historically significant for its high-quality sound and reception capabilities, making it a notable model in the evolution of audio tuners. It is often praised for its performance and is considered one of the best tuners of its time, reflecting Yamaha's commitment to audio excellence.

The T-85 is one amazing tuner! This is the finest non-remote digital quartz FM tuner i have ever owned!! If you live in an urban area i would not even bother with any other tuner. feed this tuner with any signal amount, the front end on the T-85 can handle it,very overload resistant. as far as sound goes, think of the great british mini-monitors, you know- glorious midrange but not extended at the extremes.

Where the T85 really comes into its own is on the weak stations. I compared it to the T7 on a very distant signal and where the T85 was quite listenable and pleasant, The T7 was breaking up severely with much distortion and hiss. Both units were running off the same amplified antenna.

This unit can automatically select the appropriate band width (4 widths) which would be 'super narrow' on a very weak station.

Build quality is great, the controls have a real quality feel and the internals are carefully designed with RF & display screening. Plenty of lights and indicators to keep the tech heads happy. The platform mounted circuit board covers most of the interior and is neat, spacious and logically laid out (this is not an air filled box, unlike most modern tuners), a big filter capacitor and reasonable transformer is used. The unit is quite deeper than is normal for a tuner.
