The Gibson Marauder is a unique, solid-body electric guitar produced by Gibson from 1974 to 1979 (with some models assembled from leftover parts until 1982). Introduced during the Norlin era, it was Gibson's experimental attempt to compete directly with Fender's dominant bolt-on neck and single-coil market. Key Design & FeaturesThe Marauder combined classic Gibson styling with Fender-inspired hardware and electronic layouts:
- Body & Neck: It featured a contoured Les Paul-style body paired with a bolt-on laminated maple neck and a distinctive Flying V-style tapered headstock. Body woods varied between maple, alder, and mahogany.
- Pickups by Bill Lawrence: It utilized highly unique, epoxy-potted pickups designed by legendary pickup builder Bill Lawrence. This included a traditional humbucker in the neck and a blade-style single-coil (also technically a humbucker internally) angled at the bridge, delivering a twangy, bright tone reminiscent of a Fender Telecaster Custom.
- Controls: Early models used a standard 3-way toggle switch. In 1976, Gibson introduced a "chicken-head" rotary blend switch that allowed players to seamlessly pan between the two pickups
