Up for grabs is a 1974 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul with 50+ years of real playing history. This is a seriously cool vintage player with naturally aged/yellowed binding, tons of character, and the kind of mojo you simply can’t manufacture.
I bought this from a professional touring musician, and it plays incredibly well. The neck is full but not oversized—super comfortable, fast, and broken-in. It has been refretted with jumbo frets and plays effortlessly. Tuning and intonation are excellent with the original vintage milk-bottle Grover tuners.
The electronics and hardware have been extensively upgraded with some great vintage-inspired choices:
- 1975 DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge pickup
- 1970s DiMarzio PAF neck pickup
- VIPots 550K modern pots
- Bumblebee paper-in-oil capacitors
- Gibson ABR-1 bridge
- Lightweight tailpiece
- New nut
- Jumbo fret refret
- 1960s reflector knobs
- Luminary dots added at the 17th & 19th frets, positioned above the fret binding
Headstock / Repair:
The guitar has an old, stable headstock repair that is solid as a rock. Importantly, this was NOT a headstock break. At some point, a small piece of the volute chipped off and was repaired. The repair is visible under blacklight photos, while the rest of the original paint remains intact. See photos for details.
The guitar weighs 9.0 lbs on my bathroom scale and comes with a newer TLK case.
This thing sounds like Thunder Hammer—huge, aggressive, punchy, and alive, with the Super Distortion delivering serious authority and the DiMarzio PAF giving you a killer vintage neck tone.
A genuinely cool 50-year-old Gibson with real history, great upgrades, and an absolutely killer feel. Not a museum piece—this one was built to be played.
