Signed by the legendary acoustic engineer Lloyd Loar in 1924, this one of what is believed to be fewer than 35 of the famed Loar L-5s made. This example was owned for many years by David Grisman and has been verified to have been among the instruments used on the Tone Poems 2 album with Martin Taylor, likely among other recordings.
This L-5 displays the classic tone that has made these guitars so well known and celebrated. I have personally played 5 of these Loar signed guitars at this point and I believe this one is likely the best sounding one that I have tried. This is also one of only two of these guitars that is verified as having been made without a Virzi tone producer. Some have had them removed, but this example never had one. The playability is excellent and all notes ring out clearly at all frets.
All original hardware is present, including the tuners, truss rod cover, bridge, tailpiece, endpin, pickguard, and pickguard mounting bracket with the laminated celluloid plate. This example is one that features silver plated tuners and tailpiece, rather than the gold-plated seen on some. Note that the tuners are the early three on a plate style with the worm gear mounted under the sprocket rather than above. This guitar was renecked by Gibson at some point, but the original headstock overlay was preserved. It was also rebound and refinished at that time.
