One of our favourite amps for recording and smaller gigs: classic chimey Fender tones you’ve heard on countless recordings.

Dating from 1976, this amp is has had a full overhaul from a local amp tech. The original mains transformer has been replaced with a UK/EU 220/240 unit, but the original is available if required. The spring tank has also been replaced. Details of work below.

Deluxe Reverbs are pretty much top of the Fender tree for us as recording amps: they nail classic Fender sounds from clear and bell-like chiming tones to growling break up. The early-mid 70s Silverfaces are great value vintage valve amps that rarely disappoint.

Rewire HT so first caps are before standby switch

Was in pretty much original condition, which is nice, but several things needed changing...
Power supply and all electrolytic caps replaced. New mains transformer will work on 230 or 115V; I have fitted a voltage selector where the US mains outlet was.
This model has no HT fuse so I have done this properly and fitted two in the HT ac so everything is fully protected.
Valves: 6V6s are an unusual type, Fender branded and obviously quite old. These are too slim for the original retaining clips, one of which was broken anyway, so new retainers fitted. Rectifier is also a bit funny looking but tests OK as a GZ34. Preamp valves were mostly OK; one old 7025 failed so replaced with an EH 12AX7.
HT was wired with the big power supply caps after the standby switch, which is not at all good (and not like the schematic, odd); hot-switching valve rectifiers is a recipe for expensive disasters so this rectified.
Tremolo was weak and ticking; this fixed with a new bug (Coopersonic) and an extra
cap for the tick. Now nice and deep and pleasant sounding.
Reverb was also working but anything but a very quiet signal was driving the tank into nasty distortion so new 3 spring medium tank fitted.
