This is my personal custom-built HSS Stratocaster loaded pickguard, assembled in 2007–2008 using genuine Fender components. It was built around the Fender SCN (Samarium Cobalt Noiseless) pickup platform developed by the legendary Bill Lawrence in collaboration with Fender for the American Deluxe Series.

- Genuine Fender SCN Neck Pickup (ST-NK Rev D)
- Genuine Fender SCN Middle Pickup (ST-MD Rev D)
- Genuine Fender Fender-branded bridge humbucker
- CTS 250K potentiometers (49th week of 2008 date codes)
- Custom brushed aluminum pickguard
- Fully wired HSS assembly
- Standard Stratocaster mounting pattern
This is not a production Fender pickguard. I built it myself using premium parts at a time when the SCN pickups were still Fender's flagship noiseless design.
About the SCN pickups
SCN stands for Samarium Cobalt Noiseless.
These pickups were designed by Bill Lawrence, one of the most influential pickup designers in guitar history. Lawrence worked directly with Fender to create the SCN system for the American Deluxe Stratocaster and Telecaster. The design uses samarium-cobalt magnets and a unique magnetic structure to produce a wider, softer magnetic field while eliminating 60-cycle hum.
These were Fender's top noiseless pickups from approximately 2004 through 2010, before they were replaced by the N3 series. They remain sought after because many players feel they retain more of the dynamics and clarity of traditional single coils than earlier noiseless designs.
Why I built it
My goal was to build a professional, studio-grade Strat wiring assembly that combined:
- Completely hum-free operation
- Fender single-coil character
- A powerful bridge humbucker
- Premium CTS electronics
- Maximum shielding with an aluminum pickguard
It has been installed in my personal custom Strat for years and has performed flawlessly.
I'm now changing the direction of that guitar, so this complete assembly is available as a ready-to-install upgrade.
