This Rhodes Mark 1 is an 88-key electric stage piano, or "suitcase" piano which became very popular in the 1970s.The keyboard has an incredible, unique, mellow sound that has set the Rhodes apart since the 70s. The later-produced Mark 1’s such as this are said to be the best sounding, as compared to those made in the early 70’s. A distinct tone with soft, warm bass matched against clear and bright treble. The “BASS BOOST” control knob allows for some manipulation of the sound; offering fuzzy rock and funk tones alongside a clean and light jazzy sound. Rest assured, the Rhodes is equipped to perfectly accompany any style and any player.Like a conventional piano, the Rhodes generates sound with keys and hammers, but instead of strings, the hammers strike thin metal tines, which vibrate next to an electromagnetic pickup. Pressing a key results in a hammer striking a thin metal rod connected to a larger "tone bar". The tone generator assembly acts as a tuning fork as the tone bar reinforces and extends the tine's vibrations. A hand-wired pickup sits opposite the tine, inducing an electric current from the vibrations like an electric guitar. The signal is then sent through a cable to an external amplifier or speaker. While the instrument's line output can be recorded "direct," it is often played through an amplifier to add some crunch and character to the sound. The keyboard's touch and action is comparable an acoustic piano, with 88 wooden keys.Unlike many refurbished Rhodes’, this piano has all original parts; it is 100% functional, with only the expected wear-and-tear to the exterior. There is one key (pictured in the upper octave under "eighty-eight) that sticks, and a few more that are very slightly off balance to the rest and in need of service. All of the original handles and latches are functional and durable. Overall, this unit is in very impressive condition given the age and nature of the instrument.The piano, legs, and pedal can all be consolidated in a travel friendly case; the lid features a storage compartment for the hardware. It is then placed and latched directly on top of the keyboard for travel and storage.Overall, this is a very high quality, sought after piece that any serious musician or collector would be lucky to get their hands on.
