Direct-to-Digital AES/EBU Professional Quality Studio Microphone System. Beyerdynamic MCD 100 digital large-diaphragm condenser microphone with the original MPD 200 power supply / control unit.

This is a true direct-to-digital microphone system. The MCD 100 converts the microphone signal to digital inside the microphone itself, outputting a 24-bit / 48 kHz. The MPD 200 supplies power, gain control and clocking, and connects directly to your audio interface, recorder or digital console.

How this system connects & works

- From the microphone to the MPD 200: standard balanced XLR microphone cable

- From the MPD 200 to your interface/recorder/console: standard AES/EBU (XLR) digital cable

The result is a very short, clean and stable signal path with low noise and excellent consistency.

Sound & character

The MCD 100 sounds open, smooth and very direct, without harshness. It has a wide, even frequency response and a neutral character that becomes fuller when working close to the source due to proximity effect.

A unique and very musical feature is how the gain control interacts with the internal overload protection: Higher gain settings (up to +36 dB) give the sound more density and body. Peaks stay safely controlled at maximum digital level. No obvious compression, pumping or distortion. In practice, the gain almost feels like a “density control”: more weight and thickness at higher settings, cleaner and lighter at lower ones — while peaks remain intact.

Applications

Very well suited for:

- Vocals and voice-over

- Strings, where the extremely low noise floor (around –100 dB usable range) makes it ideal for capturing fast transients, delicate passages, or recording from a distance

- Trumpet, saxophone, percussion, bass, drums and electric guitar, where high sound pressure levels can be captured safely without clipping or harshness

Thanks to its ability to handle both very quiet and very loud sources, this microphone remains clean and controlled in demanding recording situations.

Context & comparison to modern digital microphones.

Modern digital microphones include models such as: Neumann TLM 103 D / D-01, Schoeps digital microphones used in broadcast and film, DPA microphones with digital adapters. USB microphones like the Neumann TLM 102 USB or Apogee MiC Plus

High-end professional digital microphones usually use AES/EBU (like this system) and typically cost €1,200–€3,000 or more. USB microphones are easier to connect, but generally prioritise convenience over maximum sound quality, headroom and robustness.

At the listing price, this MCD 100 + MPD 200 offers exceptional value for money if you’re looking for a serious digital microphone rather than a convenience-focused USB solution.
