The Sennheiser MD 421 HL is one of the classic early versions of Sennheiser’s legendary MD 421 dynamic cardioid microphone. Built in Germany during the original production era, a microphone design that became one of the most recognizable professional dynamic microphones ever produced.

This particular example is in GOOD TECHNICAL AND POOR OPTICAL CONDITION and has been converted to standard XLR and standard low impedance, allowing straightforward connection to modern microphone preamps, interfaces and mixing consoles.

The impedance conversion makes this identical to the N Model rather than HL - Therefore the rest of the article will cover the N Version.

The microphone features a robust housing designed for professional studio, broadcast and location use. Internally, the MD 421 uses Sennheiser’s well-known dynamic capsule construction together with a humbucking coil, helping reduce electromagnetic interference when working around amplifiers, power supplies and other studio equipment.

Its large moving-coil capsule and carefully designed acoustic system give the microphone a combination of sensitivity, frequency extension and directional control.

The low frequencies are substantial and controlled, giving instruments and voices weight without becoming excessively muddy. The midrange is clear and present, while the upper frequencies retain enough detail and articulation to give the microphone a surprisingly open character.

This balance makes the MD 421 exceptionally versatile. It is equally at home on vocals, drums, toms, guitar amplifiers, brass, percussion and speech, and can handle very high sound-pressure levels while retaining clarity and definition.

Introduced at the beginning of the 1960s, the Sennheiser MD 421 quickly established itself as one of Germany’s most important professional dynamic microphone designs.
