fully serviced Tapco 4400A Reverberation System - dual spring reverb with EQ / 4400

rare dual channel spring reverb unit with graphic equalization. This is the 4400A updated version with Accutronics Type 9 (3 springs) reverb tanks (better sound), optimise pre and post eq circuitry and better connection (input jacks normalled to ease mono in two out mode).
Unit was serviced:
- all faders were replaced. These units are known for having their original fader get stuck by the dried grease used at the time. The original faders are unobtainable but CCTV.fm from Australia developped some pcb adapter that let you use modern faders. I used Bourns PT45 ones as advised on CCTV site. Size and specs are the same. Lever is different so I added white plastic cap to match the original look.
- all electrolytic and tantalum capacitors were replaced
- everything was cleaned inside and outside

The unit works perfectly and looks great.

Please note that this is a dual channel spring reverb, not a true stereo one, in the sense that you won't get exactly the same sound from both channel with the same settings. This unit was meant as a budget one. However it works very well used as a stereo reverb (mono or stereo in), you just need to set the EQ with your ears and not your eyes. Just check the lengthy video I made, this is exactly what you get (listen with headphones to hear subtle differences).
Also since the power transformer is on the PCB and near the spring tank there is a slight hum on the output. If used as specified in the manual (set input gain to reach 0 on the vu meter and output level to match input source) this shouldn't be a major concern. Again check the video, it was recorded straight with no effect nor treatment.
Minor issue is the right vu meter needle sometimes stick in the upper position. A simple light tap on the meter will free it.
