Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a classic Shure model microphone known as the 545SD model that was sold sometime during the 1970's and was the industry standard having excellent tone and used for a variety of purposes. It comes with the mic clip and mic cable shown in which to operate. It should be noted that this 545SD is factory set at high impedance but more on that in a minute. The 545SD originally came out in the 1970's and was initially an American made model but it was eventually made in Mexico around the mid to late 1980's. The mic is still built today but I believe it's been made in China for the past 25 years and is called the 545SD-LC. This is the American made example and by far the most desirable. This 545SD has been thoroughly gone over and cleaned. It's quite nice and works like new. The 545SD is an absolute work horse and they tend to hold up very well despite being decades old. Pic # 2 shows this very mic in a 1980's Shure catalog showing the 545SD as well as a few other 545 variants being manufactured and sold along with their characteristics. The 545 series mic was a very rugged and reliable model mic that holds up well with time and use. Shure used to sell many of their microphones in the Hi Z factory setting by reconfiguring the wiring within the mic itself to get that setting and those mics were sold with specialized cables that were also wired differently than the standard cable. This caused a lot of confusion if you ever misplaced the cable or tried to use the mic without the proper cable. This 545SD is one of those mics. Shure eventually stopped selling the Shure 545SD in Hi Z and simply sold the PE54 model which was a Hi Z model only. Same mics but eventually the 545SD was a Low Z only model as where the PE54 and PE54D were strictly Hi Z. The Low Z 545SD has a warm, smooth tone with plenty of bass and where the Hi Z version lacks bass and is very bright and slightly dirtier in tone. This 545SD has the dirtier tone but still sounds very good especially if you have a low voice like myself. This Hi Z mic will be great for a HAM radio or any other audio equipment that requires a Hi Z input. The 545SD has excellent uni-directional characteristics as well. Probably the most popular and certainly one of the most rugged mics ever developed in the past 40 years. As you can see the mic itself is in very nice overall physical condition. The satin chrome absolutely glows. No scratches, scuff marks or pitting. The black plastic cartridge shows just a couple tiny scuff marks but it's free of fractures or deep scratches. The Shure label shows no wear and completely legible but you'll notice that the original cartridge was replaced with a 546 model which was actually the more expensive version of the 545 or 545SD. The front screen is free of tarnish, dents or odors but the original foam inner pop filter was replaced as it was completely gone from older age. If you buy an older 545, 545S, 545SD or 545L model mic it's crucial that the old foam pop filters are replaced to get the best sound performance from this mic. The 545SD comes with the on / off switch and the switch works perfectly. No issues. Mic takes a standard XLR cable and one is provided. It's a very short cable that's appx 8 inches long long. Soft, pliable and works perfectly. I cleaned the XLR pins on the mic and cable as they were tarnished and now you'll get a perfect signal once a cable is attached. You have to use the short cable on this mic because it's wired correctly to the Hi Z configuration inside the mic. Just leave the short cable on at all times then attach any standard XLR cable as an extension and you won't have any issues using the mic but again, you have to use the short cable provided. I'd rate the cosmetic condition of the mic a true 8 on a scale of 1 - 10. The older plastic mic mic clip works perfectly giving you a firm grip on the mic with a wide range of tilt. The clip looks excellent and the tension in the joint mechanism is adjustable via side screw. This mic is ready to go!
