The Browne Amplification Carbon X starts with a simple but dangerous idea: what if you put two “blue side” voices from the Protein/Carbon world into one pedal — and made them stack even better? The result is a Bluesbreaker-inspired dual overdrive that doesn’t simply duplicate the same circuit twice, but gives you two complementary voices for everything from clean push and dynamic low gain to thick, open, harmonically rich leads.

In terms of sonic family, the Carbon X clearly lives in the Bluesbreaker / dual amp-like overdrive territory: open response, strong dynamics, touch sensitivity and a very natural way of pushing an amp. This is not a nasal, compressed Tube Screamer-style voice; the feel is much more like an amp breathing, sitting in that sweet spot between clarity, grit and sustain.

The left side is the Carbon V2, Browne’s refined Carbon circuit, with a 3-way Hi-Cut switch to tailor the top end and keep stacked tones under control when using bright amps or pickups. It is the more polished, open and controlled side: perfect as a low-gain foundation, always-on sweetener or first push into your amp.

The right side is a different animal. Browne stripped away some of its sheen and headroom to create a more gritty, raw and saggy response. Since February 2025, this side is labeled Level/Drive to make its role clearer: it has lower output than the left side, but more drive and a wilder feel. This is the side that adds character, natural compression and extra bite when you want the pedal to start pushing harder.

The real magic happens with both sides engaged. The Carbon X can create a third-channel feel: the right side adds saturation and sag, while the left side shapes, controls the top end and keeps note clarity intact. The stack is thick and expressive without turning into mush — ideal for riffs, solos, edge-of-breakup tones, singing leads and that “more amp than pedal” overdrive feel.

It’s also built for modern pedalboards: soft switching, adjustable startup state and an internal switch for looper/switcher use, making it easier to integrate each side into more advanced rigs.
