The "thermal aging" process is a special high-temperature drying process commonly known as "baking" or "roasting." It makes woods light and hard and provides stability and better resonance.

It represents the culmination of decades of work by the Custom Shop team of experts – a tireless quest to bring precision and authenticity into the hands of fans.
Instruments built in the Murphy Lab department are ultra-accurate recreations of iconic Gibson models, perfectly mimicking the feel of Gibson's Golden Age use.
For 25 years, Tom Murphy has replicated the vibe and character of vintage guitars. Working with the master luthier, Gibson reverse engineered the original, imperfect and brittle Gibson lacquer from the 1950s/60s, which caused marks in the finish.
Each aged Murphy Lab creation takes a completely separate path through the Custom Shop, receiving Murphy Lab's special lacquer formula and Murphy Lab techniques applied by hand.
Each Murphy Lab artisan has been trained by Tom Murphy to become an aging expert.
