A rare and highly versatile piece of analog outboard gear designed by Steven Slate and Studio Electronics.
The Dragon is much more than a traditional compressor. At its core is an 1176-style FET compression circuit, combined with a Class-A discrete amplifier and transformer-balanced output stage. It can go from relatively clean and controlled compression all the way to aggressive, saturated and highly characterful sounds.
The amount of tone-shaping available in one unit is pretty exceptional. It features:

- Ratios from 2:1 through 20:1 and Squash
- Vintage compression mode
- Sheen, Bite & Boom character/EQ controls
- 4-stage analog-style saturation
- High-pass sidechain filter
- Parallel compression / Dry-Wet Mix control
- Class-A discrete output stage
- Transformer-balanced output
- Large illuminated VU meter
- XLR and balanced TRS connections
The Dragon can be incredibly effective on vocals, drums, bass, guitars, synths, percussion and stereo buses. The combination of FET compression, saturation and parallel processing makes it particularly useful when you want to add character rather than simply control dynamics.
This is a professional studio-grade unit, made in the USA, and the Dragon has unfortunately been discontinued, making good examples increasingly difficult to find.
