And if anyone wants to trade Cali76 compressor for my Empress, I'm all in!

One of the best - if not the best - bass compressors in the world. One function makes it different: Sidechain HPF (High-Pass Filter) on the Empress Bass 0Compressor prevents heavy low-frequency notes from over-triggering the compression circuit.

Low frequencies carry far more energy than high frequencies. Without a sidechain filter, playing deep low notes (like an open E or low B) can trigger massive gain reduction, squashing your overall output and causing high notes, finger attacks, or pops to duck unnaturally ("pumping").

What it actually does:

  • Filters the detector, not your main tone: It removes low frequencies (sweepable from 20 Hz to 400 Hz) only from the internal detection circuit that tells the compressor when to activate. Your full, un-cut low end still passes through to the output.

  • Preserves low-end punch: Because the detection circuit ignores sub/low bass energy, heavy low notes won't force the compressor to clamp down heavily on the rest of your signal.
  • Balances dynamic response: It allows the higher frequencies (mids, snaps, pick attack) to dictate or participate equally in how compression is applied, yielding a much more natural, dynamic, and consistent tone across the entire fretboard.
