The ESP Pocket Studio is a portable, analog guitar and keyboard processing device from the 1980s that was developed as an improved alternative to the Rockman X100 by Tom Scholz (Boston).

The Pocket Studio was developed by ESP Japan in response to the Rockman X100 and distributed in Europe by the German wholesaler Nobels/MS Music Service. It was used by well-known musicians such as the Scorpions, Frank Zappa and Otto Waalkes. It was later replaced by rival products such as the JHS Rockbox and the Nobels Sound Studio 1.

Technical features and functions

  • Sound selection: A 6-way selector switch offered the following sound options:
  • Normal Sound (without speaker simulation, with optional 440 Hz tuning tone)
  • Clean 1 and Clean 2
  • Overdrive and Distortion.

Effects:

  • Chorus and Reverb could be switched on or off individually for the first time (in contrast to the Rockman, where they were inevitably combined).
  • The effects were generated analog with BBD chips (e.g. MN3007), typical for the time.

Connections:

  • Two 6.3 mm jack outputs (mono/stereo) for mixer or amp.
  • One 3.5 mm headphone socket.
  • Level adjustment:
  • A mini pot for adjusting the input gain to avoid overdriving humbuckers.
