The concept is particularly appealing: preserve the essentials of a great bass — balance, comfort, dynamics and musicality — while adding a much more advanced design and a range of tonal possibilities capable of meeting the demands of today’s styles and playing techniques. The MDM1005 perfectly embodies this philosophy with a modern, versatile and remarkably comprehensive 5-string bass.Its design immediately catches the eye. The Midnight Arctic Ocean Matte finish, combined with black hardware and the flowing lines of the MDM body, gives it a look that is both understated, modern and distinctly high-end. Behind this particularly successful aesthetic lies a strong focus on ergonomics. The MDM body has been specifically developed around its 24 frets to maintain excellent balance while providing particularly smooth access to the upper register. Its carefully sculpted contours also improve contact with the instrument, whether played sitting down or standing up.The MDM5 roasted maple neck is one of the bass’s major strengths. The heat treatment improves stability, resistance to humidity and tolerance to temperature changes, while also providing an exceptionally pleasant playing feel. With its 24 Medium Stainless Steel frets, 305 mm radius and 34" scale length, the MDM1005 offers an extremely comfortable platform for everything from traditional bass lines to more modern techniques. Access to the highest frets is further enhanced by the Super All Access Neck Joint, while the luminescent side dots are particularly useful on stage.The electronics are arguably what sets the MDM1005 apart most clearly. Ibanez has equipped it with two passive Delta S5J hum-cancelling pickups, capable of delivering a strong, dynamic attack while retaining excellent definition. Their character is deliberately versatile: aggressive enough to cut through a mix with ease, yet balanced enough to remain musical and precise. The hum-cancelling design also helps maintain clarity with reduced noise.This is where the MDM1005 becomes particularly interesting. Its Ibanez Sonitech S preamp provides a comprehensive 3-band EQ, with the option to instantly return to passive operation using the push/pull EQ bypass on the Master Tone control. Even more importantly, Ibanez has incorporated its Hexa Mid System, allowing the player to choose between two banks of midrange frequencies, providing six different tonal focus points. The low bank offers 250, 450 and 850 Hz, while the high bank provides 350, 600 Hz and 1 kHz. This allows the bassist to select the specific midrange area they want to emphasize or cut according to the desired tone and musical context.This architecture gives the MDM1005 an exceptionally broad tonal palette. It can deliver a full, deep sound for groove-oriented playing, a much more aggressive attack for rock or metal, precise tonal shaping for modern productions, or enhanced mids to make every note stand out in a dense mix. The real advantage of the system is not simply the number of available controls, but the ability to work on the right frequencies with genuine musical efficiency.The MR5S bridge, with its 18 mm string spacing, further contributes to this modern and highly functional approach. Its adjustable saddles allow the string spacing to be fine-tuned to suit the player’s preferences. The particularly lightweight Ibanez Aero-light tuners also help reduce headstock weight and contribute to the instrument’s overall balance.With its 34" scale length, standard G-D-A-E-B tuning, factory-fitted D’Addario .045–.130 strings and rosewood fretboard, the MDM1005 retains all the essential characteristics of a genuine, versatile 5-string bass. It is not designed around a single style or playing technique: it is an instrument intended to follow the musician, from traditional bass playing to much more contemporary approaches.The Ibanez MDM1005-MAM is therefore an excellent demonstration of what the new Mode Series has to offer.
