Snare Drums For Sale on Reverb
The snare is the most recognizable component of a drum set and one of the most defining aspects of a drummer's tone. Snare drums can warmly complement the mix, as is the case with wood snares like maple or cherry, or they can slice through the thickest guitars.
Ranging from the snappy shallower depth of the piccolo snares favored in reggae to the thunderous 8" behemoths preferred in metal, finding your signature sound for the music you play takes time and a wide sampling of snare types. Whether you're just starting out in your search for that perfect tone or have a specific model in mind, find the best snare drums on Reverb.
What to Consider When Choosing a Snare Drum
Shell Material: One of the biggest decisions a player has to make when selecting the right snare for them is with regard to what material their snare shell is made from. Wooden shells—made from tonewoods like maple, mahogany, birch, and more—tend to be warmer and more resonant than their sharper metal-shelled counterparts, which have a crisper, brighter attack and are made from metals like copper, aluminum, and steel.
Snare Wire: The type of snare wire your snare has also affects the tone and resonance of the drum. Coiled snare wire, for example, offers a quick response to low dynamics and is sharp and bright with a long sustain, while cabled snare wire is darker and warmer with a fuller sound and shorter sustain. Snare wire can be made from all kinds of material, both metal and synthetic.
Snare Drum Size: Size is an important consideration when it comes to your snare as well. Drum set snares are generally shallower than marching snares, for instance, which feature more depth to project louder volumes. But even within the shallower depths of drum set snares, you'll find varying levels of depth to choose from. Hard-hitting, loud players might opt for something robust like the Ludwig 6.5x14" Brass Black Beauty while players looking for more articulation might go for the Ludwig 5x14" No. 404 Acrolite
