About this listing
1968 Gibson LG-0 Natural – Rare Spruce Top – Original Tuners & Vintage StrapOffered for sale is a beautiful vintage Gibson LG-0, serial number 517447, dating to approximately 1968 and built at Gibson’s legendary Kalamazoo, Michigan factory. This is a particularly interesting example of the LG-0 because it features the less-common natural spruce top, rather than the mahogany top found on the majority of LG-0 guitars. Combined with the mahogany back and sides and Gibson’s ladder-braced construction, it gives this guitar the dry, woody and direct vintage voice for which these small-body Gibsons have become so well loved. The LG-0 was Gibson’s straightforward, no-frills small-body acoustic, but decades later these guitars have developed a following all their own. They’re lightweight, comfortable to hold and have a wonderfully distinctive sound that works especially well for blues, folk, country, roots music, fingerstyle and recording.Features:Gibson LG-0Approximately 1968Serial Number: 517447Made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USANatural finishSpruce topMahogany back and sidesMahogany neckRosewood fingerboardRosewood bridgeGibson adjustable saddle systemLadder-braced constructionApproximately 24 3/4” scaleDot fingerboard inlaysBlack Gibson pickguardReplacement tuning machines currently installedOriginal three-on-a-strip tuning machines includedClassic gold Gibson headstock logoVintage nitrocellulose lacquer finishVintage guitar strap included, appearing to be period-correctTuners & Original Hardware:At some point in the guitar’s history, the original three-on-a-strip tuning machines were removed and replaced with the individual tuning machines currently installed.Importantly, the original tuning machines were retained and will be included with the guitar. They are shown in the photographs. This is a nice bonus for a vintage instrument, as the next owner has the original hardware should they wish to preserve it with the guitar or investigate returning the instrument to its original tuner configuration.Vintage Strap Included:Also included is the vintage leather guitar strap shown in the photographs. The strap appears consistent with the period of the guitar and makes a very cool companion piece to this late-1960s Gibson. I cannot document its exact age or manufacturer, so it is being represented simply as a vintage, apparently period-correct strap rather than as original equipment supplied with the guitar.Condition:This guitar presents extremely well for an instrument approaching 60 years old. The natural top has developed a beautiful warm vintage color, while the mahogany back and sides remain remarkably clean. As expected with a vintage instrument, there are normal signs of age and use, including light finish wear, small marks and other age-related cosmetic imperfections. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and show the guitar’s actual condition. The original-style Gibson adjustable bridge and saddle system remains in place, as does the screwed-on black pickguard characteristic of LG-0s from this period. The guitars action and playability is exceptional The Spruce-Top LG-0:Most players associate the LG-0 with Gibson’s familiar all-mahogany construction. During the later production period, however, Gibson also produced LG-0s with spruce tops, making examples such as this one an interesting variation on the model. The spruce adds a slightly different character to the classic LG-0 formula while retaining the quick response and strong fundamental associated with Gibson’s ladder-braced small-body acoustics. It’s a wonderfully uncomplicated vintage acoustic: light in the hands, comfortable to play and unmistakably Gibson.A Great Vintage Gibson:Vintage Gibson acoustics have a personality that’s difficult to duplicate with a modern guitar, and the LG-0 remains one of the most accessible ways to experience a genuine Kalamazoo-built Gibson from the 1960s.This example is especially appealing because of its natural spruce top, clean overall appearance, included original tuning machines and vintage period-style strap.Whether you’re looking for a vintage blues/folk guitar, a recording instrument with a distinctive voice, or simply a cool piece of Gibson history, this LG-0 deserves a look.Included with the sale:1968 Gibson LG-0Original three-on-a-strip tuning machinesVintage leather guitar strap shown in the photographsPlease review all photographs carefully for exact cosmetic condition. They are considered part of the description. The guitar will be carefully packed and fully insured for shipment.Thank you for looking.
