Introduced in 1942 as the successor to the J-35, the J-45 has since become one of Gibson's most popular acoustic flat-tops. It earned a reputation as a guitarist's workhorse, embraced for its no-nonsense aesthetic and big, bold tone.

The warm, woody sound of vintage J-45s is truly captivating, and this 1959 model is a perfect example! Its mahogany body and spruce top produce that beautifully dry, mature tone that only comes from years of playing. The mahogany neck, featuring a C-profile and rosewood fretboard, rounds out the irresistible playing experience.

The guitar boasts the classic look that makes vintage Gibsons so appealing; the Sunburst finish shows authentic age-related checking, and the large pickguard introduced in 1955 adorns the top. Signs of playwear around the soundhole reveal that this instrument has seen plenty of action!

Technically speaking, some cracks in the top have been repaired. Cleats have been glued in for stabilization on the treble side of the neck (extending toward the soundhole), between the pickguard and the bridge, and at the end of the center seam. Additionally, an extra maple plate has been glued onto the bridge plate, and the guitar has undergone a refret, after which the fretboard was oversprayed. Finally, the tuners, nut, and saddle have all been replaced.

It is clear that this J-45 has been a reliable workhorse with plenty of stories to tell. We’re a little envious of the lucky guitarist who gets to hold this instrument and share those stories!
