Focusrite Clarett 8PreX Thunderbolt Audio Interface – 26 In / 28 Out

Selling a Focusrite Clarett 8PreX, the flagship model from Focusrite’s original Thunderbolt-based Clarett range.

This is a professional 2U rackmount audio interface featuring eight Clarett microphone preamps, extensive analog and digital I/O, and Thunderbolt connectivity with very low latency. It is particularly well suited for larger home/project studios, drum recording, full-band sessions, and studios using multiple pieces of analog outboard gear.

Getting a similar amount of analog and digital I/O in a newer interface can easily cost considerably more.

The unit has mainly been installed in a rack in a smoke-free home studio and has seen relatively little use. I gradually moved over to the UAD/Apollo ecosystem because of the plugins, Console workflow, and the more compact setup.

The interface has recently been tested with a Mac and Focusrite Control. Recording, playback, headphone outputs, Thunderbolt connectivity, and routing are all working as they should.

Key Features

  • 8 Clarett microphone preamps with separate mic and line inputs
  • Instrument inputs on channels 1 and 2
  • AIR mode available on all eight preamps
  • Recording up to 24-bit / 192 kHz
  • 10 balanced analog outputs
  • 2 independent headphone outputs with separate volume controls
  • ADAT, S/PDIF, MIDI and Word Clock I/O
  • Up to 26 inputs and 28 outputs at 44.1/48 kHz
  • 8 LED input meters and 2 LED output meters
  • Individual gain, phantom power, high-pass filter and polarity controls from the front panel
  • Thunderbolt connectivity for very low-latency operation

The Clarett 8PreX is particularly useful if you need to record several microphones simultaneously — for example drums, a full band, guitar amps, or other multi-channel sessions.

It is also a very practical interface for studios using external preamps, compressors, EQs and other analog hardware, thanks to its large number of analog inputs and outputs and flexible routing capabilities.

The 8PreX was the flagship of the Clarett range when released and originally sold in Norway for approximately NOK 13,000–15,000, depending on retailer and exchange rates.

I am selling it because I am consolidating my studio around a newer and more compact audio interface.

Condition

Very good, fully functional condition.
Mainly rack-mounted and used in a smoke-free home studio. Minor cosmetic signs of use may be present, but nothing that affects operation.

Thunderbolt cable and original Apple Thunderbolt adapter can be included by arrangement.
