1. The High-Voltage Headroom (30V vs 9V)
The V1 Power Circuit: Runs internally on an intense 24V to 30V DC power supply.
The V2 Power Circuit: Was updated to accept standard 9V DC pedalboard power for player convenience.
The Sonic Difference: Even though both pedals share the exact same Traynor TS-50B circuit design, the extreme high-voltage input of the v1provides massive internal headroom. Touring musicians and players note that the v1 sounds significantly "bigger", more upfront in the mix, and punches harder in a high-volume live band context. [1, 2]
2. Transient Response and Compression
- The V1 Advantage: Because the v1 operates with much higher internal voltage, it doesn't clip or squash your initial bass string attack as quickly. It delivers a hyper-fast, punchy transient response. [1]
- The V2 Tradeoff: To make the v2 run on 9V power, the internal voltage tracking is handled differently. Some players feel the v2 compresses a bit earlier and behaves more like a traditional drive pedal, losing a fraction of the raw, "amp-about-to-blow" dynamic response that made the v1 famous. [1, 2]
3. Collector Scarcity
- The v1 is no longer in production, making it a finite resource for fans of the "Shellac / Jesus Lizard" clanging bass tone.
- Because managing the v1's power supply setup is a hassle, many units were lost, damaged, or separated from their proprietary wall warts over the years. Finding a fully operational v1 (especially bundled with an aftermarket solution like a Cioks 4022 cable) is highly sought after by tone purists. []
