Here is the MIJ DS-1 you've been looking for!
Made in Japan Boss DS-1 in great working condition and unusually good cosmetic condition for its age, with serial number 604600, indicating it is from June 1986, right in the classic Japanese production era before the transition to Taiwan in the late ’80s.
These mid-’80s MIJ units are typically the ones people are after when they talk about the “smoother” DS-1 character, and I can vouch for that as I played MIJ and MIT DS-1s (both black label) and noted the difference myself. It's not about good or bad, they're just different.
This version is known for a smoother, more balanced response compared to later models, with plenty of bite, and with a tighter low end and no fizzy top. It excels at classic distortion tones, from crunchy rhythm work to cutting leads, and cleans up surprisingly well with your guitar’s volume.
The DS-1 has been a staple on countless recordings, used by players like Kurt Cobain, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani, which says a lot about how versatile it is across genres.
If you’re after a straightforward, no-nonsense distortion pedal with a proven track record and a true vintage character, this MIJ DS-1 is for you.
