Inspired by the original Cub prototype created by Mark Sampson in 1999, this Bad Cat Cub 15 was completely reimagined in 2026 by John Thompson, owner of Bad Cat, featuring a new tone stack and a redesigned power section. The result is a 15-watt, Class AB tube amplifier that retains the immediate, organic character of the original design while evolving toward a more versatile and contemporary response. The single-channel circuit offers two modes—CLEAN and OVERDRIVE—allowing for a transition from open, bright, and dynamic tones to a fuller, harmonically rich saturation. Additionally, two independent MASTER volume controls allow you to set two different volume levels and switch between them via footswitch—a highly practical solution for both live performances and studio work. The tube complement includes two 12AX7s in the preamp, a 12AX7 as a phase inverter, and a pair of cathode-biased EL34s in the power stage. This is a unique configuration for a 15-watt amplifier, delivering great depth, prominent mids, authoritative lows, and a response that is highly sensitive to the player’s dynamics. A studio-quality reverb adds ambiance without masking the instrument’s character, while a buffered FX loop allows for the integration of external effects while keeping the signal clear and natural. The open-back Baltic birch cabinet houses a 12-inch, 25-watt, 8-ohm Celestion G12M Greenback—a classic speaker that highlights the warmer, three-dimensional, and slightly gritty qualities of the circuit. This particular unit stands out even further with its custom aesthetic: "Baby Blue" Bronco Tolex paired with a tan grille cloth, white piping, and a tan leather handle—an elegant, vintage-inspired look that is instantly recognizable. Hand-built in the Mod Shop and designed and crafted in Costa Mesa, California, the Cub 15 is a boutique amplifier tailored for those who seek an authentic tube response—one that reacts to the nuances of your touch and turns every dynamic variation into an integral part of the sound. A two-button footswitch for CLEAN/OD and MASTER 1/2 switching is included. It is an especially compelling choice for those in Italy and Europe looking for boutique amplifiers and high-end gear, available through Guitar Sauce.
