A very cool vintage electric guitar gig bag with a distinctive structured design, most likely dating from 1979–1980.

The exact manufacturer and country of manufacture are unknown, so I cannot confirm this as a Greco product or as a Japanese-made bag. However, its design corresponds very closely to the Greco “Standard Shoulder Case” shown in original Japanese Greco catalogues from 1979 and 1980.

I have also found surviving examples of very similar bags associated with period Greco instruments, including a 1980 Greco GOIII-700. The same distinctive design and textured brown finish can also be seen on bags accompanying late-1970s and early-1980s Greco Strat-style and Les Paul-style guitars. This places the design firmly within the visual language of Japanese guitar accessories from that period, and particularly within the world of vintage Greco instruments.

The bag therefore appears very consistent with Greco and Japanese guitar accessories of that era, although it is being sold as an unbranded vintage gig bag rather than as an authenticated Greco product.

Construction & Details

Exterior: cognac / reddish brown
Interior: mustard gold / golden ochre
Material: synthetic leather
Structured and padded construction
Distinctive heavily textured exterior finish
Large external accessory pocket with snap-fastened flap
Twin carrying handles
Detachable shoulder strap
YKK main zipper
CROWN snap fasteners
Brass-tone hardware with natural age-related patina
Weight: approx. 1260 g

Compared with many simpler vintage gig bags of the period, this one has a noticeably more substantial and structured construction. The padded interior also provides considerably more protection than a typical lightweight soft gig bag.

Dimensions

Exterior:
Length: approx. 102 cm
Maximum width: approx. 36 cm

Interior:
Length: approx. 100 cm
Maximum width: approx. 34 cm

Based on its dimensions, this example corresponds to the guitar-sized version rather than the bass version.

Please compare these measurements carefully with your instrument before purchasing.

Despite being intended for an electric guitar, the bag can also accommodate some compact or short-scale instruments. For example, a Squier Mini Precision Bass fits inside.

Condition

Very good vintage condition overall, especially considering its age of approximately 45+ years.

The synthetic leather exterior has aged beautifully and retains a strong, rich cognac / reddish-brown colour. The characteristic textured surface gives the bag considerably more structure and visual character than many simpler vintage gig bags from the same period.

The exterior shows natural ageing, creasing, surface wear, colour variation and patina throughout. These are part of the character of the bag and have not been restored or artificially aged.

All zippers work properly.

The handles, front pocket, snap fasteners and detachable shoulder strap are all present. There are normal signs of age and use, particularly on the carrying handles.

The wider section of the mustard-gold interior lining and padding shows some normal wear and a few marks from previous use, as visible in the photographs.

Because there is no surviving Greco or Made in Japan marking on this particular example, I am selling it as an unbranded vintage case consistent with the Greco Standard Shoulder Case of the 1979–1980 period, rather than claiming definitive Greco manufacture.

Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description and show the actual condition of the bag.
