Boss DS‑1 silver screw is the earliest DS‑1 version (1978–1981), identifiable by its metal battery‑door screw and long‑dash logo. It gives slightly warmer, smoother distortion compared with later revisions. Collectors prize it for its build differences and subtle tonal character, though circuit changes were small and individual units vary.
